Voluminous Ponytail

Adding lots of volume to your ponytail will infuse a retro appeal with a hint of sexiness. You can recreate this fabulous look with a few simple steps.

Start with clean hair. Once hair has dried, add a suitable amount of volumizing mousse, starting from the roots and working into the length of your hair.

Use a 1 ¼ inch curling iron or large hot rollers (preferably jumbo size) to create big curls. Once the curls have cooled, brush through your hair. Backcomb the top to create volume and gather hair at the back to form a ponytail. Spritz on some hair spray to smooth down fly-aways and use an elastic tie to secure your ponytail. The end of a rat-tail comb can be used to pull the top higher and into the shape you want.

Crimped Ponytail

This modern variation of the ponytail was inspired by runway and catwalks looks in 2014. The subtle crimping on the top section of hair only is a great look to sport this summer. It gives lots of added texture to the hair . . . and pizzaz to your style!

Start with clean hair and blow-dry smooth using a round brush for volume and body. Use a crimping iron on the top 5 to 6 inches of your hair. Pul it back into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic. Take a few small strands from the ponytail and wrap it around the to conceal the elastic. Secure any loose ends with bobby pins.

Spritz hair with a texturizing spray to give added dimension to the hair. You can also allow a few small pieces to fall around the face to create a softening effect.

Textured Side Ponytail

The textured side ponytail has a romantic feel and it suits any occasion. The best part is, it looks as appropriate at a garden party as it does at a suit and tie affair. And, it’s so simple to do!

Start with clean hair. Apply your choice of a heat protectant spray and blow-dry with a big round brush or rough-dry using your fingers for an even bigger, mussier effect. Apply a beach spray to create texture.

Use a 1-inch iron to curl your hair. At this point, you can spritz on more beach spray if needed. Use your fingers to work the product into the strands.

Gather your hair to form a side ponytail – it doesn’t need to look perfect, in fact, the more undone it looks the better. Let soft pieces fall naturally around your face. Take a small section of the ponytail and wrap it around before securing with a bobby pin. You can also form a braid from this section of hair, wrap it and secure it with a pin. Tousle or backcomb the ends of your ponytail using your fingers to enhance volume and texture. Spritz with your choice of light to medium hold hairspray.

Which of these ponytail variations are you going to rock this spring and summer?
