How to Protect Your Hair and Scalp From the Sun
This is by far the best sunscreen advice I’ve heard; “The best sunscreen is anything that you will actually use generously and according to label directions.”
I’ll admit, the best sunscreen for your hair and scalp is probably subjective, not unlike that for other parts of your body, but the best sunscreen for your hair and scalp WILL be the one you use! And, when it comes finding one you like it should be affective, easy to use, non-greasy and one that won’t weigh down your hair.
Women are more apt to buy hair products formulated to protect their hair color from fading rather than for sunscreen protection for their hair and scalp. But the scalp is as vulnerable to burning as any other exposed areas of skin. A sunburned scalp is not only painful but a badly burned scalp can contribute to hair loss.
According to Lawrence Gibson, M.D., a dermatologist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, “Too much exposure to both UVA and UVB rays raises your risk of skin tumors, including a form of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. The best sunscreen offers protection from all UV light. SPF stands for sun protection factor. This is a measure of how well the sunscreen deflects UVB rays. Currently, there’s no standard for measuring UVA protection.”
Manufacturers keep coming up with new applications for sunscreens and some are more scalp-friendly than others. Sunscreens come in gels, creams, sticks, sprays and powders. The rule of thumb is to look for broad-spectrum coverage with UVA/UVB protection and a SPF of at least 15.
These sunscreen products for the hair and scalp make our “best of” list because they are the easiest to apply and carry all the protection you need!
